Curriculum
The Marine Systems Engineering
(MSE) program combines many of the technical courses of the
Marine Engineering Operations (MEO) and
the Marine Engineering Technology (MET) programs with a 10-course calculus-based design and
analysis sequence, in addition to the180 days of industrial practice at sea
required by the other programs, "Systems" also includes a three-to-four month
co-op term in a shoreside industrial or government engineering
facility.
The complete program takes five
years, with the opportunity to sit for the U.S. Coast Guard Third Assistant
Engineer's License in the fourth year; and, at the completion of the first semester of the fifth
year, they may sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering
examination, which is the first step in becoming a licensed Professional
Engineer (P.E.). Students
in this program may apply for a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in
Marine Engineering Operations after four years of study, with automatic eligibility to
return to complete the fifth year within a three-year period after
graduation. (With this 4-year option, Cs-250 - Computing and Statistics is not
required.) A more complete description with all the required courses is available
in the MMA Online Catalog which can be seen by clicking on MSE
Curriculum. . Successful completion of the program
leads to a Bachelor of Science with a major in Marine Systems Engineering, and
prepares the graduate for careers in applied or design engineering, engineering
consulting, or management positions in maritime, industrial power, or general
engineering fields. A listing of graduate schools and permanent employment obtained by recent graduates may be viewed by clicking
MSE Grad Studies and Jobs.
The program in Marine Systems
Engineering is designed for students with a strong mathematical and analytical
ability as well as interest in practical engineering. The objectives and outcomes of the program may be viewed by
clicking MSE Objectives and Outcomes. Men and women, whether just out of high school or having experience in college or in employment, are welcomed.
While there is no minimum required SAT score, most recent graduates accepted into the MSE program have combined SAT scores between 1050 and 1375, and math scores between 500 and 725. Students with good
communications skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and an interest in travel are especially welcome.
The Marine Systems Engineering program is
accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation
Board for Engineering and Technology ("EAC of ABET").
